As I was warming up backstage last night at Carnegie Hall I got into a little slap bass playing. A student approached me and commented on the slap style as "rockabilly bass" and I realized that most bassists aren't aware of the history of jazz bass. The slap style now commonly associated with rockabilly music was the way all bassists played when they first began to replace the tuba in jazz bands. Here is a great video of a master class with the amazing Ray Brown where he explains the evolution of the bass in jazz. The video is in a few parts, this is just the first part but you can easily find the rest. Enjoy!
